He favors single-shoulder plate polished to a matte shine, leather straps threaded with knots of ship's rope. When he moves he keeps the gait of someone who spends as much time on deck as on land, slightly forward-leaning, weight ready to correct a roll. Unexpectedly, tucked beneath his breastplate is a faded child's ribbon tied in the knot his granddaughter taught him, and he smooths it with a thumb when nobody is looking.
