Maelis Varrune
Warlock (Pact of the Tome)
Maelis Varrune
Species
Human
Appearance
Maelis looks like someone who eats moonlight and forgets to sleep. She moves with a measured, featherlight gait that makes her seem smaller than she is; when she stops walking she holds her head tilted as if listening to something only she can hear. Her skin is paper-thin and almost translucent in places, veins faintly visible like inked runes. Her chest bears a pale, ribbed scar where the Book of Shadows fused with her ribs during the empire's final ritual — a place that occasionally glows with black starlight. Her fingers are long and ink-stained, quick in gesture, often trailing a residue of some dustlike ash. Contradiction clings to her: she is frail to the eye, clothes hanging on a slender frame, yet when she speaks or gestures the air bends and the dark around her feels heavier, as if the night itself answers. She favors keeping her left sleeve cuff folded, revealing a faintly burned line circling her wrist that never heals.
“Soft, slightly husky. She speaks slowly, with deliberate cadence, often trailing sentences off as if listening to an unseen accompaniment.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale ribbed scar on the left chest where her Book of Shadows fused
One eye flecked with gold, the other rimmed violet and almost luminescent
Ink-stained fingertips and a faint, unhealing burn ring around her left wrist
A scarf embroidered with shifting constellations
Voice
“Soft, slightly hoarse with a small vibrato on the last syllable when tired; becomes eerily calm when angry.”
Clothing
A layered dark coat woven from star-satin — dull and matte in daylight, catching pinpricks of light at night — over a thin gray shift. Her clothes are patched but meticulously mended with tiny stitches of silver thread. Strapped across her back is a faintly glowing satchel where she keeps the fragments of her ritual tools; wrapped in leather at her hip is a tiny bone-handled dagger. She wears a ragged scarf with embroidered constellations that never match any known star charts.
Body Language
Often keeps hands close to her chest as if shielding the fused book; when nervous she tucks hair behind her ear repeatedly; when lying she looks at the floor and hums under her breath.
