Barnaby is a rotund, jovial-looking halfling with sun-reddened skin and a thicket of unruly ginger hair beginning to salt with gray. He stands three feet tall but carries himself with a certain grace that belies his bulk. His most striking feature is his expressive, oversized hands which are perpetually ink-stained. Despite his humble shop, he wears a high-collared velvet vest of deep plum and a silk cravat that looks suspiciously like a repurposed banner. He has a curious way of stepping that produces absolutely no sound on even the creakiest floorboards. A jagged scar runs through his left eyebrow, yet he offsets this intimidating mark with a pair of silver-rimmed spectacles perched precariously on the tip of his nose. He moves with a rhythmic, bouncing gait when happy, but becomes a statue of still, focused tension when he suspects a shoplifter.
