Hester moves like a tide. She walks slowly, each step measured as if counting time. Her face is narrow and lined with tiny surgical scars clustered around her mouth and jaw. When she reaches for something she does so with a midwife's steadiness, fingers that remember grips and sutures. She wears a heavy iron chain coiled at her waist like a girdle and a slate-grey shawl embroidered with tiny sigils in thread that looks almost like dried blood. Her left thumb bears a small, crescent-shaped scar that gleams faintly when she speaks the Chain. Unexpectedly, she favors a pair of delicate carved bone hairpins that clack softly when she moves, an incongruous finery with her austere bearing.
