Vernhal of the Riven Bough
Wardkeeper (Nature Warden)
Vernhal of the Riven Bough
Species
Treant
Appearance
Vernhal looks like a tall, spindly silhouette of winter-twisted timber whose bark is scored with old runes and careless graffiti from mortal children. His limbs are long and angular, with knuckles that flare into leaf-like plates. Moss clusters in the hollows of his joints, and lichen grows in delicate filigree down the left side of his chest, like a living sash. One clavish root is scarred and white where lightning split him in youth; at that scar a single, bright green sprout always trembles as if breathing. When he walks he moves with a slow, deliberate sway like a procession, yet his fingers twitch like curious crows. Unexpectedly, Vernhal hums—soft, off-key tunes—when angry or pleased, a human trait incongruous with his ancient voice.
“Measured, slow, deep; uses metaphor and natural imagery; will sometimes lapse into druidic runes when invoking old rites. Speaks plainly with friends, bluntly with those he distrusts, and sings short phrases when contemplative.”

Runic grooves carved into his chest by an old druidic pact
Tiny bell and river-glass necklace that rings when he is emotionally agitated
Patch of golden lichen shaped like a crescent moon
Voice
“Low, resonant, and slow; a whisper like wind through dry leaves when angry, a bubbling brook when amused.”
Clothing
Vernhal wears no fabric but adorns himself with found tokens: a braided leather strap of fox-hide with small bells, a woven garland of dried herbs, and a string of river-glass beads that clink like rain.
Body Language
Sways subtly as if rooted, points with elongated twig-fingers, and tilts his head like a leaning sapling when curious.
