Unexpectedly, one of his eyes (the left) is clouded with a pale solar luster that refracts light into tiny rainbows when he blinks; in contrast, the skin beneath his right wrist is tattooed with a child's crude map in soot — a relic of a youthful misadventure he refuses to explain.
