Garran Thoal
Barge-master
Garran Thoal
Species
Half-elf
Appearance
Lean, hawk-faced, and always leaning slightly as if balancing against a swell even when ashore. Garran wears a battered leather cap whose brim is stiff with salt and ink. His hands are perpetually stained with black ink and old rope chafe; the ink often forms minute, map-like smudges along his knuckles. He moves with the cautious, economical step of someone who has spent half a life on gangplanks: deliberate, measured, and capable of sudden rapid motion when a rope must be thrown. Contradiction: despite his weathered, salt-scarred features and sea-smell, he keeps a small patch of lavender behind his left ear — a habit from his mother that makes him blossom with unexpected scent in the middle of the salt and diesel air.
“Measured, low-voiced, precise; uses nautical metaphors and old river sayings. He often speaks in short clauses with a cadence that mimics the push-and-pull of a tow line.”

Distinguishing Features
Ink-stained fingers and faint ink-whorls on his palms
A small crescent scar at the left jawline from a barge rope
Silver streak in hair known as 'the river's wick'
Lavender tucked behind left ear
Voice
“Low and husky from salt and long suppers of smoked fish; when angry his words sharpen like a snapped rope.”
Clothing
A heavy waxed canvas coat patched at the elbows, a charcoal-gray knitted vest, coarse linen shirt with sleeves usually rolled, slim leather trousers tucked into weathered calf boots, and a belt with brass rings for messenger cords. Always a slate-gray scarf knotted under his chin against river mist.
Body Language
Keeps hands busy: tending ink-stained pen, retightening scarf, or tapping patterns on railings. Leans forward when listening, stands lightly balanced on feet as if ready to step onto a plank.
