Appearance
Mael is an immense, granite-shaped presence who moves with the careful economy of a man who measures every footfall before it occurs. His skin is pitted and freckled like river-weathered stone, with a face scored by ritual scars that form near-perfect concentric rings above his left brow. He keeps his hair in a single, thick black braid that falls down his back, threaded through with thin silver wire engraved with the sigils of Nivergarde's founding families. His ceremonial robes are tailored to his bulk but cut with rigid geometric panels that flare at the shoulders like the facets of a tower. When still he resembles a carved statue; when he speaks or gestures his hands are deliberate and angular, as if chiseling intent into the air. Unexpectedly, his left forearm bears a patchwork of smooth, embroidered velvet hidden beneath his gauntlet—a soft, domestic comfort at odds with his basalt mien.
“Formal and clipped, Mael favors short declarative sentences. He uses building metaphors and municipal terms as default; when angered his words become an iron edict, when amused his diction softens and he allows a slow, rare chuckle.”
