He favors long, coral-carved pauldrons and a flowing ceremonial mantle made of interwoven kelp-fibers dyed a dusky pearl — the mantle always drifts a fraction of a second later than his movement, as if memory lags behind the present. Unexpectedly, his crown is not metal but a circlet of polished river-glass and harmonized shells, cracked in one place and neatly sealed with molten silver — a visible reminder of an old wound.
