Eldra Quillword
Shop Atmosphere
“The Gilded Page sits on a narrow side street, its brass sign depicting an open book and a stylized quill. Inside, the air smells of old paper, beeswax polish and a faint tang of ink; stacks of tomes form shadowy aisles lit by hanging lamps. A narrow oak ladder on a rail provides access to towering shelves. Eldra Quillword, a small-framed human with ink-speckled fingers and spectacles perpetually slipping down her nose, runs the shop. She moves with the careful deliberation of someone who has spent decades reading the margins of other people's lives. She remembers the names of regular customers and their favorite authors, offers cautious counsel for fledgling spellcasters (for a fee), and always has a warm cup of spiced tea ready for anyone who asks. A grey tomcat named Papyrus patrols the lower shelves and has an annoying habit of batting pens into customers' laps. Eldra keeps several more valuable volumes under the counter and is willing to barter for curiosities, promises of information, or rare ingredients; she dislikes insults to books and will demand apologies in the form of a poem. The shop often carries a small rotating stock of secondhand spell scrolls and one or two oddities Eldra acquired on her travels.”
