A glossy black onyx set in a brass ring. Reflected light seems swallowed by the stone.

Once attuned, the wearer can cast Darkness (as a 2nd-level spell) once per long rest. After first use, the wearer must succeed on a Wisdom save or suffer 1 level of exhaustion that cannot be removed while the gem is worn. Removing the ring requires a Strength check if the wearer fails the save.

A smokey quartz that hums faintly when held to the ear.

Grants advantage on Perception checks that rely on hearing. However, the bearer hears constant whispers (disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws and Perception checks not relying on hearing). Whispers occasionally (10% per hour) compel the bearer to speak a single truth the next time they would lie.

A warm ruby that pulses like a heartbeat. Slightly too warm to touch comfortably.

When the attuned bearer takes melee damage, they can as a reaction cause the attacker to take fire damage (usable 3 times per day). Curse: the bearer gains vulnerability to cold while attuned, and whenever the ruby triggers it increases the bearer's aggression (must succeed Wisdom save or move to attack the nearest hostile creature on its next turn if possible).

A small garnet cut in a harsh Duergar faceting style. No overt magic, but unnervingly pretty.

None (mundane gem).

A hexagonal crystal that reflects a slightly altered image of the holder.

When looked into, the shard shows an idealized version of the holder and grants a bonus to Charisma (Deception) checks for 1 hour. Curse: the holder slowly loses self-knowledge — disadvantage on Insight checks about themselves and friends until Remove Curse is cast. Lies spoken while under the shard's influence have an increasing chance of revealing a secret (DM fiat).

A rough topaz with a faintly spiraling inclusion.

Once per day, the holder can gain +2 to initiative and act an extra time at the end of the first round (acting before surprise/long rests). Curse: after use, the holder takes a -1 penalty to all Dexterity checks for 24 hours and feels 'out of phase' with time.

An opal that seems to show shadowy figures moving inside it.

When held steady, the opal allows the user to cast Speak with Dead once (uses the target's corpse if present) but the answers are fragmented and occasionally hostile. Curse: binding the opal to a person draws ghostly attention — minor haunt (roll each night; on a 1–2, a poltergeist effect occurs nearby).

A small leather pouch containing six uncut semi-precious stones (amethysts, garnets, topaz fragments).

None. Useful as barter, component costs, or spellcasting components where a gem of negligible value is acceptable.

A small set of abrasives, oils, a cloth, and a simple magnifying loupe made by duergar hands.

None. Gives advantage on checks to identify flaws or appraise gems when used properly (one-time benefit per gem).

A deep green emerald threaded with a filament that seems almost like a vein.

If embedded in a weapon (requires craftsman time), the weapon deals an extra necrotic damage on hit. Curse: each time the weapon deals necrotic damage, the wielder must succeed on a Constitution save or gain a -1 penalty to maximum hit points until they finish a long rest (stacks up to -3). Remove Curse severs the filament but ruins the emerald.

Shop Atmosphere

Vizryn's greasy smile and quick hands are as much a feature as his inventory. He intersperses sales pitches with half-truths about the gems' origins (always 'duergar-cut, mined near the smoldering veins of Xor' or 'taken from a subterranean shrine') and is eager to see evidence of a buyer's coin before revealing the worst of a gem's curse. He sometimes offers 'favors'—in the form of minor discounts—if a buyer agrees to run a small errand to fetch a 'cleansing stone' or to retrieve a parcel from a dangerous lower level. Vizryn keeps a ledger of debts carved into a small iron tablet hidden under the counter; he smiles when someone thinks they've bested him, then quietly calls in the favor later. Removing any cursed item requires magic (Remove Curse/Greater Restoration) or the shopkeeper's own overpriced 'handler's rites'—which also carry subtle obligations.
