The proprietor, Master Merouv Quillcrest, is a human wizard of middling renown who used to tutor nobles before settling as a bookseller. Merouv is always dressed in a faded blue robe dusted with chalk and charcoal, spectacles perched on the end of his nose, and a chain of tiny brass bookmarks jangling at his belt. He enjoys bargaining in riddles and will accept minor favors in lieu of coin for appraisal work. The shop smells of pipe tobacco, lemon oil, and old paper. On the counter sits a battered tin of bookmarks; behind it a locked glass case holds more costly grimoires. Merouv insists on testing inks for authenticity and rarely parts with a book without telling its story. He offers modest discounts to teachers, scribes, and wizards in hard times.”
