Shop Atmosphere
“Underbough's General sits on a crooked lane near the market square—a low, wide building whose windows glow amber at dusk. Shelves rise to the rafters and are crammed with useful things: coils of rope, jars of pickled mushrooms, neatly labeled vials of oil, and a conspicuous basket of secondhand boots. Marta Underbough, the proprietor, is a no-nonsense middle-aged human with ink-stained fingers and a warm, steady voice. She wears a patched apron with so many pockets she could find a needle by humming; a small grey mouser named Pips sleeps on the counter and will only be shooed when customers need exact change. Marta likes to barter—she'll trade rope for a tale or a useful trinket—and is known to slip a free candle to honest youngsters or a bandage to wounded travelers. Hours are long: she opens before dawn to sell coffee and dry rations to fishermen and closes after the last lantern is doused, unless she smells a good storm coming—in which case she keeps selling lantern oil until the last villager is stocked up.”
