Shop Atmosphere
“Balan's Sundries sits on a narrow lane that slopes down to Qamar's Anchorage. The shop smells of tar, salt, old rope and lemon oil. Shelves are stacked high with coils of rope, jars of preserved limes, tins of oil and ropeada hooks. A battered ship's wheel hangs behind the counter, and a cat that answers to 'Ledger' perches on a pile of ledgers and napkins. Balan Farshore runs the place. He is a human, once a small-time smuggler, now a careful merchant; he keeps one eyebrow permanently raised and offers you a choice between a fair price and a better story. He knows the incoming captains, the tide charts, and which customs official takes a shine to a round of ale. Bargains are possible if you trade a story, a favor, or something salt-stained from a shipwreck.”
