Shop Atmosphere

Alderfen General Store sits on the main street of Habetsgard: a low, wide building of weathered planks with a sagging sign painted with a faded sheaf of wheat. Inside, the air is always a mix of lanolin, oil, and warm bread from a neighbor's oven; shelves are packed with sacks of seed, coils of rope, tins of nails, and jars of suspiciously good pickled vegetables. Barrels near the back hold spares—torches, tar, and a few better tools. A stout counter is scarred from decades of hammered-in nails and the groove of a ledger where Marla keeps accounts. Marla Alderfen, the owner, is a broad-shouldered woman in her late forties with a streak-stained apron and a quick, practical laugh. Once a traveling peddler, she knows prices and people and will haggle with a farmer over a bag of seed but rarely over a neighbor's coin. She keeps one common potion of healing tucked under the counter (“for emergencies and good customers”), and will accept eggs, firewood, or a favor off the books in trade more readily than coin—especially if you bring fresh bread. Her shop dog, a brindled terrier named Stub, sleeps by the door and will inspect coin purses with equal enthusiasm. Regulars know to look for Marla's little brass token nailed above the counter—if it shines, she's in a good mood and offers a slight discount; if it's dull, better come back tomorrow.
