Shop Atmosphere
“Hearth & Haul General Store sits at the corner of Market Way and the lane to the mill. The shop smells of beeswax, dried herbs, and boot leather. Shelves are crowded but orderly, with hand-written tags and a chalkboard listing last week's arrivals. A battered brass kettle hisses in the back where the owner sometimes boils a pot of stew for traveling customers. The proprietor, Maren Oatward, is a human commoner of small build and quick hands. She is level 2 in local renown - not a warrior but a practical, sharp-minded trader. Maren keeps a ledger tucked behind the counter, hums an old road-song while she works, and favors newcomers with a free cup of weak tea while she gauges their needs. She offers small favors in trade, knows which boats arrive when at the river quay, and will barter or hold items on commission for a week. If the party is polite and honest, Maren may point them toward local odd jobs and inexpensive lodging; if they start trouble, she will loudly summon the town watch.”
