Shop Atmosphere
“Greenhill General sits on the main road into a sleepy farming village—low timber rafters, a bell above the door, and the steady smell of beeswax and stew. Shelves are crowded but tidy: sacks and ropes near the door, leather goods by the window, and a single locked cabinet behind the counter where Marta keeps the coin, nicer wares, and the solitary potion of healing that appears now and then. Marta Greenhill is a practical woman in her late forties with flour-dusted sleeves and a quick smile. She traded a brief life as a traveling peddler for a permanent shop after marrying the miller next door. Marta knows everyone’s business but is generous to strangers in need—if you barter with farm goods or help fix a shelf she’ll knock a few copper off. She hums old ballads while she measures rope and can tie a proper knot with one hand. Quirks: taps the counter three times before closing, keeps a jar of peppermints for children, will always trade for a fresh egg or a story from the road, and insists on writing a small receipt in the ledger for anything over a silver. During fairs she may have extra oddities to sell; late at night she likes to sit on the stoop and gossip with passing travelers.”
