Shop Atmosphere

The Hare of the Dog Apothecary sits half-hidden in a narrow, soot-darkened alley behind the market — a squat stone frontage crowned with iron chains and a carved wooden sign: a hare with a bandaged paw perched on the back of a lazy mastiff. Inside the shop, shelves crowd the low-ceilinged room: rows of labelled phials (many stamped with a tiny hare emblem), copper alembics, dangling bundles of pickled fungus, and a slow-burning charcoal brazier that smells of resin and wintergreen. A brass mechanical hare, about the size of a cat, perches on the counter and ticks softly; Dorgrin winds it each morning. Dorgrin Stonehare is broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, with a beard threaded in copper wire and soot-streaked forearms. He speaks in a gravelly voice that still carries the warmth of a hearth. An accomplished alchemist and former deep-mine foreman, he prefers trading for rare mineral samples or good stories over straight coin. He keeps most valuable draughts behind a rune-locked oak cabinet; regulars get a wary wink and a slug of smoky dwarven tea on the house. Dorgrin hums old dwarven mining tunes when he works, insists on weighing coin on a small brass scale, and dislikes being called 'apothecary' — he answers to 'brewer' or 'tincturer' if you’re polite. The shop occasionally offers discounts to miners, rangers, or anyone who brings genuine subterranean reagents, but Dorgrin will not sell weapons or poisons to those he deems untrustworthy.
