Shop Atmosphere
“Thistledown's Tomehouse is a narrow, three-storey shop wedged between a baker and a watchmaker in Greyhaven's quieter lane. Lantern light pools over crooked stacks of books and rolled maps; a faint smell of beeswax, old leather, and lemon-oil on shelves lingers. Merryn Thistledown, a tiny half-elf with ink-stained fingertips and a monocle, greets patrons in a quietly amused voice. Once a practicing arcane scribe, Merryn now runs the shop as a hub for apprentices, travelers, and those who need obscure facts. He hums tunelessly while working and keeps a patched journal of clients' odd requests. The shop has a resident gray mouser named 'Page' (equally fond of bookmarks and attention); behind the counter is a glass case of more valuable scrolls and a little bell that rings only when someone mentions 'dusty archives'—or so Merryn claims. Bargains: Merryn will trade a book of local lore for a service (copying a small manuscript or running a short errand) if the party seems earnest. He dislikes loud arguments, will ask customers to step outside to haggle, and is prone to offering a free cantrip-scroll to children and apprentices to encourage study.”
