Merrin keeps a pet homunculus named 'Ink' that perches on his shoulder and steals small coins when distracted. He offers free appraisal of any one minor magical trinket per customer, but insists on telling a long story about where he acquired an identical item (which may be true, partly true, or a dramatic exaggeration). Vael only accepts trade-ins on magical items he appraises; he politely refuses to sell rarer artifacts to customers who refuse to provide a brief account of their intended use.
