Shop Atmosphere

The Gilded Grimoire is a cramped shop tucked between the tannery and a noodle stall. Shelves sag under jars of powders, little cages with sleeping moths, and stacks of carefully labeled scroll tubes. A faint scent of ozone and cinnamon hangs in the air. Merelor Bumblewick, a wiry rock gnome with spectacles perpetually slipping down his nose, runs the place. He speaks quickly and pleasantly, punctuating sales with little conjured motes of light that tidy up change and return wrapped purchases. His familiar — a soot-streaked barn owl named 'Soot' — naps atop a pile of spellbooks by the back window. Merelor enjoys haggling politely and will often accept services or small curiosities in trade for lower-priced goods (especially odd gemstones or unusual inks). He dislikes loud braggarts and will charge extra for rushed services. The shop is open from dawn until the meal-bell at dusk; odd hours possible by appointment. Merelor labels items carefully and offers basic explanations for each purchase, but warns customers that powerful trinkets — and their consequences — are not his responsibility once sold.
