Shop Atmosphere

Maris Blackwell runs The Brinebound Folio from a narrow storefront that curves like the bow of a ship. Shelves tilt ever so slightly toward the east as if leaning into wind. The air smells of salt, varnish, and old paper. Stained charts hang from the rafters, and a shallow tide pool runs along the lowest shelf where a small enchanted periwinkle hums when customers ask for weather lore. Maris is a human wizard, level 5, who spent a decade as a ship's chronicler. She wears a faded captain's coat over scholar's robes and tucks a needlepoint compass in her pocket. She speaks slowly with a sea-salt lilt, prefers transactions in gold pieces, and will trade a rare chart or a day's worth of navigation lessons for a favor or a good story about a wreck. Maris hums shanties while mending bindings and insists on steaming every book exposed to sea spray before it leaves the shop. She catalogs purchases in an oversized tide-ink ledger that records who took what and what the tide was when they left.
