Shop Atmosphere

Underbough Sundries is a cozy, cluttered general store tucked against the market square. Shelves of mismatched jars and bundles climb under a low-beamed ceiling; the air smells of beeswax, smoked meat, and the tang of metal polish. Merva Underbough, a round-faced halfling with rheumy but bright eyes, runs the counter. She wears a patched apron and keeps a ledger full of names and IOUs (and a small bell for customers who try to sneak past her). Merva greets regulars with a warm but pointed remark—she's generous with advice and stories and stingy with credit to strangers, though she'll barter and throw in a free candle for a backstory worth a laugh. A slow-mouser cat named Twig naps in the lantern shelf; if Twig takes a liking to you, Merva will give you a small discount. The shop tends to keep a few more expensive or magical items (like the occasional Potion of Healing), but those are displayed in a locked glass case and sold at Merva's discretion. She prefers barter for services over coin for newcomers (repairs, a night watch, or help fetching one of her 'special bundles').
