The Lantern and Larder

The Lantern and Larder began as a one-room alehouse founded twenty-five years ago by a traveling miller who wanted a steady hearth between market towns. Over time it took on rooms and a kitchen. During a harsh winter a decade ago the inn fed more than its share of hungry travelers and peasants, which earned it strong loyalty from the nearby farms. A fire two winters past singed the roof but did not reach the stone hearth; Merrin, the current innkeeper, bought the building from the miller’s grandson and restored the inn, adding the small stage and notice board.

History

The Lantern and Larder began as a one-room alehouse founded twenty-five years ago by a traveling miller who wanted a steady hearth between market towns. Over time it took on rooms and a kitchen. During a harsh winter a decade ago the inn fed more than its share of hungry travelers and peasants, which earned it strong loyalty from the nearby farms. A fire two winters past singed the roof but did not reach the stone hearth; Merrin, the current innkeeper, bought the building from the miller’s grandson and restored the inn, adding the small stage and notice board.

Quirks

The inn’s hanging lanterns are filled with slow-floating fireflies in glass vials so the light flickers warm and gentle. Patrons often leave one coin more than they owe and write a short line of advice on a scrap of paper that gets pinned to the notice board. Once a week Merrin plays a mournful tune that seems to calm even the most restless dog.

Lore

Folklore says the inn’s first lantern was fed with an ember from a traveler’s hearth that would not go out. Locals call that ember the 'Lantern's Blessing' and claim the inn never runs out of kindness to those who need shelter. Some say a small, pale figure haunts the loft when storms roll in, a remnant of a servant lost in the long winter when the inn was only a lean-to. Children dare one another to leave a coin in the hearth alcove to ensure safe dreams.
