The Fourfold Lantern

Built nearly a century ago by a consortium of roadwardens and seasonal wardens, the Fourfold Lantern began as a simple lookout and shelter for caravans traveling the Four Seasons Forest route to Lunga. Over decades it was expanded into an inn after Maerla's grandmother tamed a rogue season-ling that had been terrorizing travelers. The inn's present three-story form dates to a renovation thirty years ago when a storm of mixed seasons collapsed part of the roof; patrons sleeping that night awoke to find pumpkins and summer petals on their pillows. Since then, the Lantern has been a neutral waypoint for those who respect the forest's moods.

History

Quirks

The tavern's internal atmosphere subtly shifts with patches of the Four Seasons Forest outside. In fall, flickering pumpkin-lantern scents pervade the rooms; waitstaff wear little carved-pumpkin pins that glow. Patrons who stay more than three nights often dream in different seasons each night. The house cat, 'Fiver', has a patch of bioluminescent fur that glows brighter when someone lies nearby.

Lore

Local lore says the Four Seasons Forest is stitched by an old fae seamstress who keeps each patch's weather in delicate balance; the Lantern sits at a point where two seams cross, creating unpredictable pockets of seasonality. The inn's lantern above the door is said to be lit with a wick carved from 'everbark'—a sapwood that remembers the last traveler's wish made under it and sometimes grants a small, seasonally appropriate boon. Elders warn: never choke the wick with smoke; the forest keeps accounts, and debts paid to seasons are not the kind a mortal can easily undo.
