The Ledger & Lantern

The Ledger & Lantern began as a wayside room thirty years ago when Edda Ledger set out a pot and a shelf of books for passing travelers. Her ledger — a thick bound book of debts and favors — became the inn's namesake. Mara Thorn took over eight years ago after helping fend off a pair of highwaymen; she kept the ledger tradition and the board of notices. Over the decades the inn grew a reputation as the place to post small jobs and swap honest gossip. The upstairs rooms were added when a winter storm trapped a dozen travelers and the inn had to shelter them for a week.

History

The Ledger & Lantern began as a wayside room thirty years ago when Edda Ledger set out a pot and a shelf of books for passing travelers. Her ledger — a thick bound book of debts and favors — became the inn's namesake. Mara Thorn took over eight years ago after helping fend off a pair of highwaymen; she kept the ledger tradition and the board of notices. Over the decades the inn grew a reputation as the place to post small jobs and swap honest gossip. The upstairs rooms were added when a winter storm trapped a dozen travelers and the inn had to shelter them for a week.

Quirks

The tavern stamps wet boots with a tiny iron board (a looping 'L' in the corner) to indicate they've been dried on the hearth. Each book on the shelf has a handwritten note tucked in it: a recommendation, a scrawl of a recipe or a remark about a road. The barman keeps a small jar of 'lost buttons' behind the bar and returns them free with a story.

Lore

Locals say Edda once hid a bell taken from a ruined watchtower beneath the hearth to keep a promise to a fallen friend. The bell is rumored to ring once for those who helped the town in true need. The bookshelf also holds an old atlas with a penciled route said to lead to a shallow cave where merchants once hid their coin in troubled years; some say the cave is now home to badgers—others insist it's empty, waiting for a new hand to claim it.
