The Salted Shadow

The Salted Shadow opened a decade ago when Marin bought the ruin of an old fishmonger’s hall and turned it into a refuge for underemployed hands of the quay. During heavy storms the tavern sheltered refugees from capsized boats and became a hub for low-level smuggling when supply lines tightened. Over time it accumulated a reputation for safe anonymity: if you paid the right fee, the tavern would neither ask nor tell. The building's cellars once belonged to a guild of fishermen who buried a ledger of debts in a stone alcove; Marin rediscovered it and used its ledgers to build a client list.

History

Quirks

Most patrons tap or knock a particular three-beat rhythm on the bar when exchanging information (a subtle code). Candles are always trimmed to a stub exactly the same length each night; their soot patterns are used to mask ink drops for secret messages.

Lore

Whispers say The Salted Shadow sits above an old tide-channel altar dedicated to a forgotten sea-folk deity who demanded offerings for calm seas. The altar was dismantled and its stones used to form the fireplace — locals swear that sometimes the hearth exudes a faint briny hum just before a big storm. Sailors and thieves both treat the tavern with a superstitious mix of reverence and practical skepticism: offerings keep the waters calm, and favors keep trouble away, but both must be paid for in coin or service.
