The Hearth & Halfpenny
The Hearth & Halfpenny has stood for three decades on a crossroads used by drovers and merchants. Marta bought it from the previous innkeep, who vanished after a particularly harsh winter. Over the years the inn served as an ad-hoc sanctuary during floods and as a meeting place for harvest councils. Its location — midway between the market town and a crossroads of minor footpaths — made it a natural hub for news and the exchange of small favors.
