The Grain & Grove

The Grain & Grove was established twenty-eight years ago by Marta's late husband, a millhand who wanted a warm place for harvesters to eat after long days. It started as a simple roadhouse for farmers and grew into a fixture of Harrowfield as the village expanded around the old mill road. Over the years it has been a place to strike bargains, celebrate bountiful yields, and occasionally hide from the storm or local taxes. Marta took over after her husband's slow fever took him; she retained his gentle diplomacy and added music nights to keep the crowd lively.

History

The Grain & Grove was established twenty-eight years ago by Marta's late husband, a millhand who wanted a warm place for harvesters to eat after long days. It started as a simple roadhouse for farmers and grew into a fixture of Harrowfield as the village expanded around the old mill road. Over the years it has been a place to strike bargains, celebrate bountiful yields, and occasionally hide from the storm or local taxes. Marta took over after her husband's slow fever took him; she retained his gentle diplomacy and added music nights to keep the crowd lively.

Quirks

The hearth is kept meticulously clean but the rafters are hung with mismatched charms and a single, ancient sickle nailed above the door as an old barn-blessing. Regulars will casually place a corn kernel on the bar when asking for Marta's favor; she accepts the gesture with a knowing nod.

Lore

Local superstition says the tavern stands on the seam of two old groves: a cultivated orchard and a wild stand where the ancient tree-spirits are said to still bargain with mortals. The sickle above the door is more than decoration — it is believed to be a harvest token that wards the tavern from want and (some whisper) from certain fey mischief. Older patrons claim that once every decade, during a heavy autumn fog, a pale figure will leave a single wax apple on the windowsill — a sign that the grove's bargains stand.
