The Running Lamb

The Running Lamb began as a drover's stop more than thirty years ago when a stream of sheep and pack wagons ran between the hinterlands and the city docks. Over time the building was altered to better serve coastal trade, adding a dock slip and a stable for carted goods. After a spring flood a generation back, the tavern was raised on new beams and expanded into the tradesman's quarter. For decades it served as a neutral meeting place where fishermen, coopers, guild clerks and odd adventurers exchanged goods, gossip and work.

History

The Running Lamb began as a drover's stop more than thirty years ago when a stream of sheep and pack wagons ran between the hinterlands and the city docks. Over time the building was altered to better serve coastal trade, adding a dock slip and a stable for carted goods. After a spring flood a generation back, the tavern was raised on new beams and expanded into the tradesman's quarter. For decades it served as a neutral meeting place where fishermen, coopers, guild clerks and odd adventurers exchanged goods, gossip and work.

Quirks

A carved wooden lamb with glass eyes sits above the bar. Patrons drop a coin into its carved mouth to 'bless' a bargain. The bar keeper rings a small, dented bell whenever a shipment arrives. The hearth always smells faintly of sea-salt and lanolin. Regulars pay a fraction of a coin to scratch a tally on a nail board for bar tabs instead of paying immediately. The fiddler keeps a jar labeled 'Rumors' where customers slip notes with gossip for a small coin.

Lore

Locals say the Lamb got its name after a runaway lamb swam from a beached lighter to the shore and somehow bolted through the tavern door during a storm. The carved running lamb over the bar is said to have once belonged to a shepherd who blessed the place so that anyone fleeing a bad bargain can find a second chance. Sailors whisper that the tavern's old bell is tuned to warn of sudden squalls. The city guilds historically treated this corner as neutral ground for arbitration between dockers and merchants.
