Hearthway Rest

The inn began as a single hearth built by a retired roadwarden twenty years ago to shelter travelers along the trading lane. Over time it expanded under successive owners into a cozy two-story inn. Six years ago it survived a small raid by highwaymen; scars remain in the patched shutters and a board nailed over the cellar door. The current innkeeper took over after her mentor retired and kept the inn's name and warm welcome while adding nightly music and the small noticeboard that made the place a hub for low-risk jobs and gossip.

History

The inn began as a single hearth built by a retired roadwarden twenty years ago to shelter travelers along the trading lane. Over time it expanded under successive owners into a cozy two-story inn. Six years ago it survived a small raid by highwaymen; scars remain in the patched shutters and a board nailed over the cellar door. The current innkeeper took over after her mentor retired and kept the inn's name and warm welcome while adding nightly music and the small noticeboard that made the place a hub for low-risk jobs and gossip.

Quirks

The inn's ledger is kept open on a single page where patrons jot short notes or sketches; whoever draws the best image by dusk gets a free tankard. A black-and-white cat named Ember sleeps on the ledger and will refuse to move for anyone but the innkeeper. Once a night the innkeeper hums a soft, almost tuneful rhythm that calms even the most anxious guest.

Lore

Locals call the inn the Hearthway Rest. Folk say the inn sits where an old milestone once stood, a marker for a forgotten lord who protected the lane. Some travelers swear the hearth's flame burns kinder to those who tell true stories. Old timers also pass along the tale of a watchpost in the low hill behind the inn; when the winds change just right you can hear a faint metal clink like armor on the path at night.
