The Condensed Flask

The Condensed Flask began a decade ago when Marla and two other tinker-folk illegally tapped a cold, disused branch of Kure's geothermal pipes to heat a makeshift soup kitchen. Word spread; the soup kitchen turned into a place for the poor to warm and swap work. Over the years the Flask grew upward in desperate stages—second and third floors added with scavenged boards—while Marla bartered mechanical favors to keep the illegal tap from blowing. The Flask survived burn-outs, a small riot, and one half-hearted demolition order; each scar is a story and each story another reason the locals call it home.

History

Quirks

The pipe hisses on the half-hour, prompting everyone to raise their mugs and yell a bawdy 'Blessing of Steam'. Coins dropped in the pipe vanish into the conduit (most believe it funds the 'Conduit Authority'). Soot lightly flakes from the ceiling during boisterous songs. Marla enforces 'no blood on the cask' — fights are allowed until one draws a blade, then she kicks both out (or calls favors). Patrons stash notes in the condensation trough as a crude mail service.

Lore

Whispers in the Katochora claim that the cobalt conduit beneath the city was laid atop a sealed vault left by the Founders. Steam is said to carry echoes of the city's original forges and, once a year, a bell of vapor tolls from the pipe and those attuned can hear voices asking for 'the condenser's due.' Old-timers insist that if you drop a coin into the pipe on a new-moon night your wish may be carried up to the Magistrate's offices — or swallowed entirely. The Flask's illegal tap is both a practical lifeline and a symbol: an open wound the authorities prefer ignored so long as the poor remain appeased.
