The Hearth & Hound

The Hearth & Hound began as a single-room wayside hearth tended by Marta Underbrow's grandfather three decades ago. Positioned on a well-traveled country lane, it grew as merchants and farmers chose its safe light over colder bridges and lonely camps. Ten years ago the inn was threatened by a bandit raid; the proprietor at the time traded livestock and paid the local watch to push the bandits onward, and the inn's reputation as a reliable, neutral stop was cemented. Marta inherited the inn after years apprenticing in cooking and bookkeeping. She rebuilt the stable and added private rooms to keep the inn welcoming to families and novice adventurers.

History

Quirks

A sleepy gray cat named Knot sleeps on the bar and lies across any open purse long enough to demand attention; the inn's bell rings in a low melancholic tone instead of a sharp chime; patrons routinely leave small scraps of bread in the hearth for 'the road spirit' and the innkeeper pockets any returned coins as a contribution jar titled 'For storms and stories'. The innkeeper keeps a small brass whistle behind the counter used to call off trouble rather than raising a brawl.

Lore

Locals say the inn sits above an old waymarker once used by caravans crossing the Inner Sea region of Golarion. Superstitious folk claim the original stone kept souls from straying off the road; though the marker itself is long gone, the land is said to favor travelers who offer a piece of bread to the hearth before sleeping. Bards tell a small tale about a hound-shaped wind that howls once a year and leads lost children home; the inn's sign bears a carved hound to honor that old story.
