The Hearthwood Hollow

The Hearthwood Hollow was built fifty years ago by Bram's great-uncle, a timberman who felled part of the Hollow Wood to build a safe waypoint between market towns. The inn grew as a rest-stop for farmers, hunters, and caravans; its beams are from the last true heartwood oak felled before the grove was declared sacred. Bram inherited the place after stints smuggling goods along old forest roads and turned it into a cozy, watchful haven. Over the decades it has weathered a bandit siege, a minor plague, and a winter of near-starvation; each time it added new tales and a new notch on the ledger.

History

Quirks

An aging barn cat named Soot claims laps and spoons with equal entitlement; mugs are branded with marks for favorites (leave one as a tip and you'll get the same mug next visit); Bram hums a mournful tune whenever there's talk of the Hollow Wood and refuses to serve any who refuse to dip fingers into the hearth-ash bowl (a local superstitious welcome). The fourth private room stays unnaturally cool and is often cheaper, but guests watch their dreams there.

Lore

Locals say the Hollow Wood is watched by 'kith-spirits'—small, vengeful guardians that can be placated with bread or angered by the removal of stone or timber. The inn stands where the old forest's path crossed a shallow ley known as the Hollow Line; odd dreams and sudden chills are blamed on that line. Bram keeps a small bowl of ash at the hearth—tossing a pinch into the fire is a folk blessing said to placate the kith for a night's rest. Older patrons whisper that a carved peddler's stone buried under the hearth maintains the balance; if it is moved or stolen, misfortune follows until it is returned.
