The Hearth and Hoard

The Hearth and Hoard began as a waystation for caravaners crossing the western trade road. Founded twenty-five years ago by a retired dwarven mercenary, the place earned its reputation by paying for lost goods and by refusing to betray sheltered travelers. As adventuring parties grew common, the house adapted. Stables expanded, a map table was nailed into the center of the common room, and a retired paladin taught a few locals how to tend wounds. After a fire that gutted part of the east wing ten years ago, the tavern rebuilt with salvaged stone and an added second floor for private rooms. Over time it became not only a rest stop but a community hub for contracts, refuge, and the occasional brawl that turned into song.

History

Quirks

Patron tables have embedded coin grooves used to settle bets quickly. A grey tavern cat named Pockets 'collects' small shiny objects and 'returns' them randomly as barter. Once per week the tavern runs a 'Tall Tale Night' where the best liar wins a free room; winners often find their lies coming true in odd ways. The tavernkeeper keeps a bell by the door that rings twice for friends and three times for troublemakers.

Lore

Local storytellers say the house was built over a gentle resting rune placed by a hedge-witch to ease travelers' dreams. The rune is said to make stories told in the common room more vivid and ensures that wounds knit a little faster for those who sleep there. Some claim the yard hides an old courier marker used during a war. Old maps kept behind the bar show a single cryptic annotation: FINDERS KEEPERS. While no one can prove arcane protection, many adventurers swear the Hearth and Hoard is where luck begins and poorly worded contracts end.
