The Gilded Hearth

The Gilded Hearth opened twenty-seven years ago when Seraphine Vell, a once-traveling lute-warden, traded the road life for a permanent roof and a stable of stories. Built inside a renovated merchant townhouse, the inn rose quickly as merchants, minor nobles and well-heeled travelers discovered its blend of discretion and refined hospitality. Over the years it has served as a meeting place for negotiating shipping contracts, a safehouse for discreet travelers and a music hall for the city’s quieter, more tasteful performers. A small fire sixteen years ago gutted the kitchen but not the guest wing; Seraphine used the opportunity to improve the bathhouse and commission the stage’s carved balustrade that now bears the inn’s emblem - a hearth combined with a silver key.

History

Quirks

The inn has a tradition of 'two rungs of the bell' - one toll calls all staff, two tolls request silence for 'sensitive words'. Patrons leaving a tip on the small silver tray near the hearth have their names inked on a folded card; the cards are later used to select performers and petitioners for the innkeeper's attention. The house enforces a strict 'no duels in public' rule and quietly refuses service to anyone who causes a scandal. Also, Seraphine collects small trinkets left behind and pins them to a corkboard; patrons may claim them for a story if they can tell one that satisfies Seraphine.

Lore

The inn’s emblem - a hearth with a small silver key - has come to mean safe exchange and discretion among traveling agents and low-ranking diplomats. Stories say a minor noble once used the Gilded Hearth to broker peace between two merchant houses, leaving behind a ledger page that Seraphine keeps hidden. The inn is also whispered to have a tenuous connection to a small local thieves' guild faction - not in the sense of collusion but as the guild’s preferred place for exchanging information for a price. The map alcove contains marginalia suggesting an old river trade route that no longer appears on official charts; those who follow it have sometimes returned with strange goods or not at all.
