Stonebuck Lodge

Built by the Stonebuck family three generations ago as a hunter's lodge, the Stonebuck Lodge grew with the foothill village that formed beneath the western ridge. The lodge sheltered survivors of a famous winter slide and then served as a meeting place when miners first staked claims higher up the slope. Through seasonal floods and a past raid by mountain raiders the lodge stood, repaired by its owners and villagers. The current keeper, Hilda Stonebuck, took over after her mother passed on the ledger and the family hounds. The lodge has long been a waypoint for shepherds, miners, and wandering rangers returning to the lowland trade roads.

History

Quirks

A raven named Patch roams the rafters and collects shiny cutlery. Patrons who sit under the western beam get roused by a chorus of creaks every hour on the hour. The hearth stones radiate residual warmth for hours after closing, making the lodge a favorite for damp travelers. Regulars have an odd custom: before every drink they 'name the mountain' aloud, often a whispered one-word invocation of gratitude or defiance. Hilda keeps a ledger full of missing spoons, claimed by Patch, and will trade a good tale for their return.

Lore

Locals tell of a 'sleeping ridge' where a guardian spirit once watched the passes and breathed mist that kept wolves thin. Old shepherds claim the stones on the ridge hum on certain nights and that those who sleep with a stone under their pillow dream of the mountain's name. Miners sometimes find shallow carvings of a stag with a spiraled antler motif—an old ward that the founding family adopted as its symbol. The geothermal spring under the lodge is said to connect to a deeper mineral seam that once sang when the earth shifted; some elderly villagers insist the spring keeps watch over the valley and will boil if angered. Such talk keeps fortune hunters and the more superstitious away, but it draws scholars, rangers, and clerics curious about old protections.
