The Lantern & Leeward

Built from a beached hull fifty years ago by a sisterhood of retired mariners known as the Leeward Mothers, the tavern began as a shelter for widows and battered crews. Over decades it grew into the Lantern & Leeward when Marta's mentor, a retired smuggler named Joren, installed the covered dock and the ledger. The tavern survived a naval crackdown twenty years ago by trading access to smugglers for the promise of port safety; that uneasy truce birthed the Slitherline's influence in the ledger. Marta inherited the place ten years ago after turning in a corrupt harbor master — and keeping a few secrets for leverage.

History

Quirks

A weathered brass bell by the bar is rung once for dead sailors, twice for missing cargo, and thrice to call for no credit — ringing a fourth time is considered a challenge and is never ignored. The staff subtly recalculates prices for those who can sing a shanty well or tell a tale that makes the room laugh. A gull named 'Ledger' perches on the rafters and steals small shiny objects; retrieving them requires bribery and patience.

Lore

Old dock folklore claims the tavern stands on a place where the sea remembers. On certain tides, the lanterns on the platform flicker in a pattern that some say are messages from drowned sailors warning of storms and treasure. A half-carved figurehead embedded in the main beam is rumored to have been gouged from the very first ship that became the tavern; superstitious sailors touch it for luck before voyages. The 'Glass Lanterns' whispered about in the ledger are said to be keyed to that figurehead and to open a submerged path beneath the harbor once lit in a particular sequence.
