The Rusted Anchor

The Rusted Anchor began as a lean-to tied to an old ship hull decades ago when the harbor was little more than a muddy inlet. Mara's father hammered the first nails into the hull planks; the pub grew around that skeleton until it swallowed three boats and a crabpot. Over generations it's been a meeting place for crews, a makeshift courtroom for dock disputes, and once even housed a short-lived 'law school' for roustabouts who wanted to learn to read manifests. The bar still bears the notch marks from the 'Brawl of the Last Storm' when two ship crews nearly sawed the main beam through with a tavern table.

History

Quirks

A battered brass bell hangs over the bar: one ring to call for service, three rings to clear the room for a brawl. A flock of ever-present gulls roosts on the rafters; patrons toss scraps and rumours alike. Mara keeps a ledger of 'debts and favours' behind the bar; it smells faintly of salt and ink.

Lore

Locals speak of the 'Drowned Bell' — a brass handbell from a wrecked fishing skiff hidden somewhere near the Anchor's pilings. Ringing three times is said to call a spirit that guides lost sailors home, but it usually brings trouble instead. Fishermen whisper that when the tide brings in black foam, the sea is not empty: small silver coins wash up with symbols that match the carved gull behind the bar. Few know the gull's true origin; those who do rarely speak of what the gull once watched from a cliff-side shrine.
