The Iron Hearth & Harbor

The Iron Hearth & Harbor was founded thirty years ago by Borin's uncle as a haven for sailors and miners. Borin took over after a pirate raid claimed his brother's life; he converted the tavern into an 'Adventurer's Haven' catering to mercenaries, treasure-seekers and those who carry scars like badges. Over the years the tavern became a crossroads for job notices and informal justice, surviving a small rebellion and a short siege by a local lord's enforcers who coveted Borin's cellar.

History

The Iron Hearth & Harbor was founded thirty years ago by Borin's uncle as a haven for sailors and miners. Borin took over after a pirate raid claimed his brother's life; he converted the tavern into an 'Adventurer's Haven' catering to mercenaries, treasure-seekers and those who carry scars like badges. Over the years the tavern became a crossroads for job notices and informal justice, surviving a small rebellion and a short siege by a local lord's enforcers who coveted Borin's cellar.

Quirks

Borin stamps guests' tankards with a small iron rune when they pay; the mark grants a single free 'second helping' within a week. The tavern's hearth never truly goes cold — embers seem to glow slightly even after a hard rain. A mounted dwarven helmet hangs above the bar with a note that reads 'Do not touch.'

Lore

The hilltop Lysmere Mansion was built by a mage-family that once served the coastal lords; their experiments in weather and wards are the subject of many whispered tales. Locals blame the mansion for bad storms and missing livestock. The Red Bands emerged in the last decade, a loose confederation of disenfranchised soldiers turned brigands. Old sailors swear the Red Bands mark their camps with a strip of red cloth tied to a spear; finding one often means finding trouble, but also opportunities for gold and revenge. Borin's dwarven runes, stamped in tankards, are said to bear a minor protective charm he learned during his militia days — a practical superstition that, coincidentally, has saved more than one patron from pickpockets and petty hexes.
