Trollskull Tavern

Trollskull Tavern sits in the North Ward of Waterdeep on a narrow lane that once hosted river barges and small merchants. For decades it changed hands until a rotund halfling landlord named Trundle Trollskull poured his coin into renovations and a brass mask was mounted above the hearth. Over the years the tavern became a favored meeting spot for low-to-mid rank adventurers, mercenaries and dockers. Marla Underbrow rented the place two years ago and transformed it into an 'Adventurer's Haven' with a neutral code: no bloodshed inside, and all disputes referred to the noticeboard arbitration. Though modest, Trollskull has hosted dozens of fledgling parties that later earned renown — which brings both fond memories and jealous eyes.

History

Quirks

A brass trollskull mask hangs behind the bar and is rotated nightly; patrons will whisper their trouble into it for luck. Marla keeps a 'tally board' of boons owed — small favors that bind regulars, from watch duty to sneaking a message. The house cat, Soot, has a habit of stealing shiny coin and leaving it under the stage.

Lore

Locals whisper that the tavern's brass skull is more than decoration: it was once used as a ritual prop by a vanished carnival troupe and is said to 'listen' to promises made beneath it. The North Ward's watch sometimes pats the tavern down for trouble, but also uses it as an informal recruitment spot for low-risk patrols. Merchants in the area respect the tavern as neutral ground — and some say a small Zhentarim cell has tried to curry favor with the staff to use the tavern as an information relay. In the wider city gossip, Trollskull is known as the best place to find a starting job and the worst place to make a permanent enemy.
