Hearth and Hound

Built where an old watchtower once stood, the Hearth and Hound opened twenty years ago as a simple waystation for caravans crossing the highland road. The original owner was a retired patrol captain who hollowed the tower base into cellars and a commonroom. After a bandit raid and a winter that nearly collapsed the roof, Edda Thorn bought and rebuilt the tavern with timber from nearby pines and stones from the old watch foundation. Over the years the Hearth and Hound became a known waypoint for mid-tier adventurers, a place to mend gear, hire muscle, and trade rumors. The cellar tunnel was bricked shut after a smuggling ring used it fifteen years ago. Local custom and the tavern's own rules keep open brawls to a minimum, but debts and old grudges sometimes bring trouble through the door.

History

Quirks

The tavern cat, Knuckle, has a habit of collecting small shiny things and stashing them under the bar. Patrons toss scraps into the 'Luck Tin' for Knuckle and the owner, which sometimes yields a coin or two for anyone who finds them. On full-moon nights the proprietor rings a hollow iron bell and offers a free mug to anyone who can tell a story of true loss. The Hearthkeeper keeps a jar of 'safe salt' used to mark rooms for those traveling with cursed trinkets. Regulars pay less if they perform a tune or help mend a roof plank.

Lore

Travelers say that the central hearth stone was laid using a fragment from the old watchtower. Folk claim the stone keeps a weary party's rest steadier than elsewhere, though whether this is hearth superstition or something older is unclear. Some older regulars insist the tavern stands on the edge of a ley line splinter that attracts restless spirits and forgotten things. Songs tell of a minor blade named 'Dawn's Reach' once lost in a cellar ruckus; treasure hunters have come seeking it and left with nothing but a new scar and a bitter ale.
