The Hearth & Haversack

The Hearth & Haversack started as a waystation for farmers bringing grain to market. Marta's grandparents took it over thirty years ago and added a stable and upstairs rooms. The inn became a modest hub for travelers, tradesmen, and the occasional traveling priest. Recently the inn's trade has picked up thanks to a newly repaired road; with more strangers passing through, Marta keeps a ledger to track tabs and troublesome faces.

History

The Hearth & Haversack started as a waystation for farmers bringing grain to market. Marta's grandparents took it over thirty years ago and added a stable and upstairs rooms. The inn became a modest hub for travelers, tradesmen, and the occasional traveling priest. Recently the inn's trade has picked up thanks to a newly repaired road; with more strangers passing through, Marta keeps a ledger to track tabs and troublesome faces.

Quirks

The inn uses a worn brass bell outside; if three rings are heard after dusk, the proprietor will slide a candle-lit lantern through a window and add a notch to the 'guest board'—a superstitious practice locals swear keeps bad luck out. The hearth always seems to smell faintly of cinnamon on market days.

Lore

Local rumor says the hearth once guided a lost child home during a winter blizzard; since then, folk leave small trinkets on the mantle on the first of winter in thanks. Some claim the items vanish by morning—others say Marta collects them for 'lost and found.' Adventurers sometimes call the place 'the Gate of Warmth' in jest, for its knack of mending both boots and tempers.
