The Hearth and Hound

The Hearth and Hound was raised from the stones of an old watchtower some 52 years ago by Jorah Hest, a retired watchman who married a traveling baker. The site sat at a crossroads used by merchants and hunters, and the inn grew around the tower's remaining cellars and well. Over the decades it served as a staging point for supply caravans and a waypoint for militia. The current innkeeper took over after a skirmish with road-cutters left the Hest family short of coin. The inn has kept the watchtower's lantern room as a small shrine and meeting place for town watch and passing adventurers.

History

The Hearth and Hound was raised from the stones of an old watchtower some 52 years ago by Jorah Hest, a retired watchman who married a traveling baker. The site sat at a crossroads used by merchants and hunters, and the inn grew around the tower's remaining cellars and well. Over the decades it served as a staging point for supply caravans and a waypoint for militia. The current innkeeper took over after a skirmish with road-cutters left the Hest family short of coin. The inn has kept the watchtower's lantern room as a small shrine and meeting place for town watch and passing adventurers.

Quirks

A fat ginger cat named Brass sleeps on the ledger and occasionally knocks over coins, causing brief commotions. Patrons drop a stamped wooden token in a clay jar when a favor or complaint is owed; the tokens are tallied on a weekly 'debt night'. The innkeeper hums an old marching tune while polishing mugs. On stormy nights the lantern room is lit even if no one climbs the stairs.

Lore

Locals whisper about the Lantern Maiden, a watchwoman who tended the tower lamp and is said to linger when a storm comes. Old maps show a forgotten beacon not far from the inn, and some believe the ground here still holds traces of protective wards meant to guide travelers. The inn is also said to be on the trade route to the Coldford ruins, which attracts treasure-seekers of middling skill.
