The Hitching Post

The Hitching Post opened twenty-one years ago when Marrek Voss returned to Westras after a decade on the road as a rider and judge for circuits of the Runs. He bought a run-down coaching house, built stalls on the lee side, and set himself the task of making a place riders trusted. Over the years the inn became the informal headquarters of the Runs in Westras. Marrek's ledger of race results and claims is the closest thing the town has to an archive. When the Kingdom of Asphemor declared a kingdom-wide ban on magic items entering registered races, The Hitching Post became the safest place in town to discuss a mount's pedigree in purely mundane terms.

History

Quirks

The Hitching Post keeps a jar of 'winning oats' that Marrek sprinkles on a young rider's mount for luck. Marrek gives a free bowl of porridge to any rider under the age of twelve who can name three past winners of the Runs. The inn cat, Whinny, is oddly attracted to boots and will steal small tokens into a hidden nook under the pantry. No magic items are permitted on the premises; Marrek enforces this with an unusually cheerful severity.

Lore

Locals tell of an old astral stallion that once ran the hill by the river, a spirit of speed that blessed worthy mounts with luck. The blessing is said to fade where magic items are used, which is one reason many in Westras prefer plain tack and honest training. The Hitching Post keeps a small, plain wooden brooch in a locked chest, displayed by Marrek as a reminder that speed and heart matter more than trickery. The Runs themselves date back generations and were once used to settle disputes and oaths among neighboring villages, a tradition that still flavors every race with fierce pride.
