The GreenPort Tap

GreenPort Tap rose with the rise of river Haven trade. When Vigil's docks swelled with barges carrying grain, timber, and foreign cloth, the inn on Oldbridge's approach transformed from a plain waystation into a center of dockside commerce and gossip. Sera Mall bought the Tap after the previous owner skipped town with a captain's purse; she rebuilt the cellar to serve as a secure meeting place and quietly added hidden stashes in the floor and behind the hearth. Over decades the Tap became a favored haunt for day laborers, independent smugglers, fences, and anyone who needed cheap drink and discretion. Marc de la Chaîne once commanded a large gang and still walks the Tap with the easy authority of a man who understands both faith and the street. More recently the drought that grips the duchy has raised the stakes; merchants and smugglers whisper of cargo being held back, of ships rerouting, and of a Barony that might seize river commerce if grain becomes scarce.

History

Quirks

The Tap is thick with smoke and salt; a brass coin-box engraved 'Two-Coins' hangs by the bar where customers drop a coin for luck or to reserve Sera's attention. Sera's ledger is always open on the bar with a chain of folded slips tucked between the pages - offerings, IOUs, and favors are written in code known only to regulars. Patrons customarily toss a coin into the hearth when making a dangerous promise. The house will swap a patron's mug for another if it thinks the conversation has become 'too hot'. The performance corner is used as a distraction during big deals; when the fiddler plays the sad shanty 'Old Haven', hands go quiet and trades begin.

Lore

GreenPort Tap sits on the lower road off Oldbridge where the river Haven narrows toward Riovanes and, beyond that, the great port of Ierdroeu. River Haven trade created Vigil's fortunes and its underworld. The Church of Galbadois holds wide influence across the duchy and its Scion Sidurie is the focus of the town temple; her priest Marc once led the largest gang in Vigil before devoting his life to the poor. Whispered among certain smugglers is a rivalry older than the barony: the Guardians in the Mist protect sites sacred to the Old Gods and regard the Church with suspicion. Their agents, including Zuri, weave into the river trade so they may move relics and guard shrine sites from discovery. Baroness Isabel Beaufort maintains a policy of toleration for petty gangs provided taxes are paid. That fragile balance is threatened by the drought and the specter of famine, which could push the Barony to intervene directly in river commerce.
