History

The Hearth & Halberd was built forty years ago by a retired halberdier who wanted a quiet place for soldiers passing through. It survived a local famine and sheltered townsfolk during a border raid a generation ago. Ownership passed to Marta five years ago after she saved the inn from a fire with buckets and quick thinking; since then it's become a favored rest stop for merchants and small adventuring bands.

Quirks

The hearth's iron crane is in the shape of a halberd; patrons who place a coin in the carved bowl by the door often receive a whispered 'luck' from an unseen regular. Everyone calls Marta 'Boss' regardless of rank. A board of lamplighters' notes hangs above the bar; discounts are sometimes scribbled there in a hurried hand.

Lore

Locals whisper the halberd finial above the chimney was forged from a captured banner-rod of a famed raider lord; they say the iron holds a sliver of his stubbornness. The carved bowl by the door is said to bring luck if a coin is placed with a true wish; superstition says the wish must be kept secret or the luck goes sour. Some older folks claim the cellar once sheltered a hidden meeting place for a defunct order of town defenders — those markings sometimes reappear after storms.
