Hearth & Hauberk

Hearth & Hauberk began as a traveling cookstand run by Mara Thatch and her younger brother during border patrols. Twenty years ago Mara put down roots in a crossroads village and built the tavern around an old mercenary's safehouse. Over the years it grew into a refuge for new adventurers, mercenaries on leave, and travelers seeking jobs. The building still bears faint scorch marks from a skirmish with bandits long before the current owner replaced the door.

History

Hearth & Hauberk began as a traveling cookstand run by Mara Thatch and her younger brother during border patrols. Twenty years ago Mara put down roots in a crossroads village and built the tavern around an old mercenary's safehouse. Over the years it grew into a refuge for new adventurers, mercenaries on leave, and travelers seeking jobs. The building still bears faint scorch marks from a skirmish with bandits long before the current owner replaced the door.

Quirks

Every new adventurer who signs the house ledger receives a small wooden token burned with the tavern's lantern mark. Patrons suspect the tokens bring luck or a tendency to attract small trouble. A raven named Patch roosts on the stage and often steals napkins; Patch will return anything shiny if bribed with a sliver of meat.

Lore

Locals say the tavern sits on the edge of an old watch road that once connected three small keeps. Poems sung on the stage mention a lost watchtower and a 'lantern kept lit for those who do not yet know their names.' Superstition holds that if an adventurer eats the house honey cake before their first contract, they will not forget the faces of those who help them on their first true quest.
