The Cornerstone Anvil

Built into the first ring of the city where old miners hewed the cornerstone, the tavern began as a workhouse where masons and smiths shared stew and smoke while the city rose. Over three generations it became the civic anchor - a place guild foremen, city councilors, and wandering adventurers all used to test their mettle. The present stonework and vaulted ceiling date from when Dorin Stonevein bought the place and reinforced it after a tunnel collapse a dozen years ago. Rumors say part of the original cornerstone contains a carved sigil from the city's founding, kept beneath the main hearth.

History

Built into the first ring of the city where old miners hewed the cornerstone, the tavern began as a workhouse where masons and smiths shared stew and smoke while the city rose. Over three generations it became the civic anchor - a place guild foremen, city councilors, and wandering adventurers all used to test their mettle. The present stonework and vaulted ceiling date from when Dorin Stonevein bought the place and reinforced it after a tunnel collapse a dozen years ago. Rumors say part of the original cornerstone contains a carved sigil from the city's founding, kept beneath the main hearth.

Quirks

Patrons clap once on the table to call for attention before making toasts. The tavern serves drinks in stoneware carved with a tiny mason's mark; each regular has a favored mark. Servers frequently throw a coin into the hearth when a stranger asks about the 'speaking stone' to pay for a little superstition. A low bell rings three times when the doors are to be secured; some interpret the pattern as an invitation to challenge or to converse, depending on tone. Dice cups are kept on a chain so they are not easily snatched.

Lore

Locals call the building the 'City Cornerstone' because its main foundation sits on the original block used when the city was laid out. Dwarven mason marks are carved into the hearthstone, each mark telling of a family that helped shape the city. Superstitious patrons claim that if the hearth is fed with coal wrapped in a carved rune, the stone will 'speak' dreams to those who sleep above. Whether that is true or a tavern tale meant to keep folk paying for rune coal is a matter for the daring to discover.
