The Hearth & Hallow

The Hearth & Hallow began as a two-room wayside post built by a retired watch captain seventy years ago to shelter patrols and traders. Over decades it expanded into an inn run by the Bramble family. During frontier days it served as a muster point for the town watch and sheltered refugees during the last border raid. Marta bought the inn from her aunt fifteen years ago and restored some of the old foundations, finding cramped cells and crude ironwork beneath the floorboards.

History

The Hearth & Hallow began as a two-room wayside post built by a retired watch captain seventy years ago to shelter patrols and traders. Over decades it expanded into an inn run by the Bramble family. During frontier days it served as a muster point for the town watch and sheltered refugees during the last border raid. Marta bought the inn from her aunt fifteen years ago and restored some of the old foundations, finding cramped cells and crude ironwork beneath the floorboards.

Quirks

Every third night a local bard sings a 'request hour' where patrons may trade a tale or rumor for a free ale; Marta keeps a jar of carved wooden charms she tacks to the beam for guests who help with chores or safe conduct.

Lore

Locals say the inn's eastern beam was carved from a tree planted when the town was founded; touching it is said to bring safe travels for short journeys. Folk stories also tell of a hidden 'watchman's hollow' beneath the inn — a cramped hole used in times of siege. A verse in an old lullaby, sometimes sung by the bards here, contains directions to a cache of emergency provisions once hidden for a failed rebellion, but the rhyme is incomplete and may hint at something more valuable than food.
